Today is International Overdose Awareness Day, a global event to commemorate the thousands of lives lost every year to overdose.
The annual observation is also designed to reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths and raise support for effective, evidence-based drug policies that save lives.
The stigma of addiction extends through life and death. Families of those lost to overdose find that the deaths of their loved ones aren't acknowledged in the same way, as if their lives didn't matter. Looking at the tribute page of the International Overdose Awareness Day website, it's clear that these lives mattered a great deal. Their losses are keenly felt, even years later.
CleanSlate joins the global community in supporting the people and families who are fighting the disease of addiction. We are committed to pushing back against the harsh judgment which surrounds this disease, and to increasing access to addiction treatment, especially life-saving medication treatment.
