"I Have Stepped Out of the Darkness, Into the Joy of Living Again": One Patient's Account of CleanSlate's Alcohol Treatment

by Heidi Alvarez-Wynn | Jul 26, 2018

Alcohol addiction recoveryThis note is from a patient who wishes to remain anonymous:

"I am sharing my personal testimony today with the hope that it will help others who suffer with addiction.

I have been in and out of rehabilitation for alcohol in the last 4 years. The rehabilitation process may work well for many; however, not so much for me! In my personal experience, it is easy to abstain from alcohol in a contained environment. They provide counseling, which give tools to help restructure old behaviors and mindfulness thinking. These two elements are essential for recovery; however in isolation, do they work in the “real world?”

Learning how to combine these elements in your everyday life is crucial in maintaining sobriety. Having said that, many of you will think to yourself…."just quit drinking!!!"

For those of you that do not share this addiction, it is not so simple. Addiction is a disease that needs to be treated like any other...and that is treatment! People with addiction cannot simply stop using drugs or alcohol and be cured of their addiction.

This is why CleanSlate works. They combine these elements in a safe environment, which provides supportive counseling that can help you work through the psychological aspects of dependence, and medications that can help address the physical changes in the brain. Without these two components, I would have NEVER been able to maintain recovery.

I have literally stepped out of the darkness and into the joy of living again.  I am incredibly grateful to the staff -  and my guardian angel  - at CleanSlate for giving me back my life!!"
