Breaking the Wave of Opioid Addiction in Sheboygan, Wisconsin

by Anthony Belott | Dec 16, 2019

Sheboygan, Wisconsin, has been a top surf destination for more than 50 years and is known by many as the Freshwater Surf Capital of the World. But beyond its pristine waters lurks a rising problem with opioid addiction.

In 2017, there were 976 overdose deaths involving opioids in Wisconsin, with Sheboygan County experiencing 21 drug-related deaths. Despite efforts to reduce these numbers, the opioid epidemic continues to take the lives of Wisconsin residents at an astonishingly high rate. In the second quarter of 2019, the state experienced 355 opioid-related deaths and 1,728 inpatient and emergency room visits.

While Wisconsin has seen a 1.3% decline in opioid-related deaths over the past three years, there is still much more that needs to be done to help bridge the addiction treatment gap and treat those in need. The state has worked to open additional treatment centers in recent years, yet still less than 2% of all substance abuse treatment facilities offer some medication-assisted treatment.

“The opioid epidemic is sweeping our nation, and we need to do more to protect the lives of those experiencing drug addiction,” said Jeri Riner, center manager for CleanSlate Sheboygan. “To help reduce the high number of opioid overdoses and deaths in Wisconsin and across the country, it’s imperative to raise awareness of the disease of addiction and fill the significant gaps in treatment focused on addressing this crisis.”

CleanSlate’s new Sheboygan center, located at 2707 S. Business Drive, is prepared to bring much-needed relief to patients suffering from addiction in the area. The center offers medication-assisted treatment and additional medical services such as vaccinations, lab services and detox. Medication-assisted treatment combines behavioral therapy and medications to treat substance use disorders and is approved by the FDA as a safe and effective treatment option.
