Outpatient Addiction Medicine Leader Partners with Pittsburgh Care Community to Treat All Facets of Opioid & Alcohol Use Disorders
Pittsburgh, Penn. – CleanSlate, a national leader in addiction medicine, has brought its medication treatment practice to Pittsburgh with a new addiction treatment center at 107 Mt. Nebo Point Drive. Staff at the Pittsburgh center, CleanSlate's sixth office-based medication treatment center in Pennsylvania, have begun seeing patients by appointment or walk-in.
"We spent many weeks prior to opening this center just developing partnerships throughout the Pittsburgh recovery community so that we can provide a continuum of care to patients," notes Dr. Jason Kirby, the Center Medical Director for CleanSlate in Pittsburgh. "That relationship-building with community partners continues, and everyone we talk to has been welcoming. We're excited to get started. Unfortunately, there's a tremendous need for our services in Pittsburgh."
The number of opioid overdoses in the Pittsburgh region has more than tripled in the past decade. According to the CDC, Pennsylvania had the nation's fourth-highest rate of drug overdose deaths last year. As reported by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Pennsylvania lost 4,642 people to drugs last year -- a 37 percent increase from 2015.
Dr. Kirby brings up-close experience with addiction to his new role at CleanSlate. Board-certified in family medicine, Kirby has primarily practiced emergency medicine throughout his career and has seen firsthand the toll of the opioid epidemic.
But what brought Kirby to addiction medicine is more personal: he himself is in recovery from alcoholism.
"The treatment community helped me out so much and gave me a deep appreciation for addiction treatment and how vital it is to recovery," Kirby reflects. "When I learned about the evidence-based practices at CleanSlate and the opportunity in Pittsburgh, I felt drawn to join this dedicated team and practice addiction medicine with a national leader in the field."
Robert Dulla, who also came from emergency medicine and is now CleanSlate's Center Manager in Pittsburgh, is similarly eager to serve the Pittsburgh community. "We call ourselves Warriors for Hope, and you really do feel that sense of mission throughout the company," says Dulla. "I came to CleanSlate with a long history in EMS and was looking for a better way to treat addiction besides emergency treatment. I'm really looking forward to being able to help patients through addiction medicine, where we can avert disaster rather than respond to it."
Having treated nearly 30,000 patients over the past decade, CleanSlate’s program of care includes appropriate medication treatment prescribed by licensed medical providers, as well as clear accountability and supportive counseling. With more than 8,000 active patients across 43 centers nationwide, the medical group is aggressively growing its footprint to expand much-needed access to medical care for addiction.
