Addressing Opioid Addiction in La Crosse, Wisconsin

by Carol Fite Lynn | Dec 16, 2019

Wisconsin is no stranger to the opioid crisis. In 2017, the state had 836 drug-related deaths. Recent studies show opioid deaths kill more Wisconsinites than car crashes.

While the state has made efforts to combat this issue, opioid-related deaths continue to prevail. In the second quarter of 2019, the state experienced 355 opioid-related deaths and 1,728 inpatient and emergency room visits. Despite ongoing work to reverse the trends, more needs to be done to provide effective treatment options to the people of Wisconsin.

“The factors that lead to addiction are complex and personal, said Lynsee Thompson, center manager for Cleanslate La Crosse. “That’s why our centers provide comprehensive, individualized programs consisting of medication and behavioral therapy to address the specific needs of those with opioid addiction.”

Medication-management treatment is an underused but vital method of combatting the opioid epidemic. Outcomes are vastly improved when patients with an opioid use disorder receive medication-assisted therapy, yet less than half of all treatment facilities in Wisconsin provide this treatment. This is due in part to misunderstanding about addiction and individuals suffering from the disease.

CleanSlate’s new La Crosse addiction treatment center, located at 2635 E. Hemstock Street, is prepared to bring much-needed relief to patients experiencing addiction in the area. The center offers medication-assisted treatment and additional medical services such as vaccinations, lab services and detoxification. Medication for addiction treatment has been demonstrated as a safe and effective method for treating opioid dependence by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration and deemed the “gold standard” for treatment by the U.S. Surgeon General.
